I have previously written about the re-introduction in 1989 by the RSPB of red kites into England. Over a period of five years some 90 birds were released on the Oxfordshire/Buckingham shire border in the Chilterns (High Wycombe area). I have been keeping a lookout for them since then as they have settled successfully and spread out across central England. Until last year I had not seen a red kite further north than Oxford. Then last year I saw one near Deddington and a possible fleeting glimpse of one over Barton. This year I have just seen one over a wood just south of Enstone. At that rate we might see some “residents” in SW7 within the next year or so.
