We met to talk about the first in our new series of books, ‘The Emigrants’ by W.G. Sebald. The author himself is an emigrant from southern Germany and he has given us the true stories of four other emigrants, very interestingly illustrated with relevant photographs. None of the emigrants really settled into their adopted homes and two went on to commit suicide. He writes so well about nostalgia for their homelands.
Some found the book difficult and very depressing, for others it had been a most interesting and rewarding read. A great book for discussion.
